Non-Alcoholic Sangria

Kombucha is often our go-to non-alcoholic drink option. It’s healthier than pop, easier than a mocktail, and has the kind of complexity and interest that's really lacking in sparkling water. Simply put, it’s the fun choice. And with our seasonal special Haskap Honey (made with local Humble Bee honey!) in this beautiful sangria, you can’t go wrong.

I’m going to pause here for a quick PSA: you don’t have to be a teetotaler or pregnant to choose to not drink on occasion.

At some point in my early twenties, this was a revelation to me. I thought I would have to make a rule of it if I turned down a drink at a party. Would refusing make me look weird? Did I lie and say my stomach was upset? Would people judge me for just not feeling like having a drink, or think that I was judging them?

Turns out, no one even noticed. I’d gotten anxious for nothing! Now, when I’m choosing a drink, I check in with myself, and choose what makes me happiest. I gave myself permission to change my mind, and as a result I enjoyed myself more, regardless of the percentage of beverage in my hand.

All of which is to say: try this recipe as-is, but you can always add the traditional brandy and red wine if you’re missing it. Kombucha is the perfect drink for mocktails due to it’s complexity, and with all of the delicious fresh fruit in this sangria, it might surprise you!

Let’s get started!

Ingredients

  • 1 orange

  • 3 peaches

  • 1 cup blackberries

  • 4-6 bunches of fresh mint

  • 3-5 bunches of fresh basil

  • 1 growler of Haskap Honey kombucha

  • Optional: sparkling water for extra bubbliness.

Steps

  1. Cut the orange in quarters, squeezing the juice out of 3 into your glass pitcher. Cut the final quarter into slices, then clean and cut up the peaches. Add those, along with the blackberries and the herbs, to the pitcher.

  2. Pour half of the growler of kombucha in, or as much as is required to cover the fruit. Refrigerate 4-6 hours/overnight.

  3. Right before serving, top with the rest of the kombucha, and the sparkling water if you opt for it. Gently mix together and serve over ice.

Is sangria just alcoholic fruit punch? Maybe so. In that case, this is still a very special and fun fruit punch. I hope it’ll feature in your socially-distant porch get-together before Haskap Honey is all sold out!
